We remember California Jam I & II

It was to be the Woodstock of the west in April of 1974.

California Jam.

Over 25o, ooo kids came to the Ontario Motor Speedway in Southern California on April 6th to see eight bands onstage during the 12 hour open-air festival. The sun was shining and the bands were rockin'! You can almost smell again those familiar concert aromas in the air...

Then came California Jam II on March 18th of 1978. Bigger, better, louder than before...Cal Jam in 1978 featured HEART, TED NUGENT, SANTANA, FOREIGNER, and AEROSMITH among others...

Be tuned into The Rockin's 70's for an exclusive retrospective of both CALIFORNIA JAM concerts this Labor day Weekend! Featuring the live music, the sounds, and the artists themselves talking about their Cal Jam experiences. It's not to be missed!

If you don't hear The Rockin' 70's on a radio near you...go to here to hear it online throughout this weekend!

A Rock And Roll Memorial

When planning our Memorial Day special paying tribute to those fallen rock heroes who gave their lives to rock n' roll...I am reminded that there are way to many casualties to cover them all in two hours. Among those contributors to rock in the 70's we didn't mention by name...Keith Moon and John Entwhistle of THE WHO, Boz Burrell of BAD COMPANY, Billy Thorpe, James Dewar of ROBIN TROWER, Cozy Powell of RAINBOW, Duane Allman and Berry Oakley of the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, Marc Bolan of T REX, John Lennon, Felix Pappalardi of MOUNTAIN, Chris Wood and and Jim Capaldi of TRAFFIC, John Curulewski of STYX, Mick Tucker and Brian Connelly of SWEET, Benjamin Orr of the CARS...

Be safe and enjoy this long holiday weekend...and remember those who gave their life in service.

Thanks for rockin'!

New News

We just got word that the anticipated TRIUMPH tour of 2009 will not be happening this year. It's speculated that the tour will indeed take place next year. No details as to why the tour has been shelved. Odd, since this 2009 tour has been talked about since last summer's TRIUMPH reunion in Sweden! Could this mean their is some behind-the-scenes trouble?

For those who have resisted getting rid of their turntables and vinyl, this is good news. Best Buy has announced they will be considering a move to devote eight square feet of retail space to vinyl product. Citing the decline of cd sales, and the rise of vinyl record sales (up 89% in 2008...the most since 1991), the retail giant has tested this move in 100 of it stores. Although now, you can bet they'll cost more than the last record you remember buying!

THIN LIZZY live and rockin' from the 70's!

A few weeks back I wrote about the anticipated (and recently discovered!) THIN LIZZY complete live album titled "Still Dangerous". It is now officially out, and we will have a few copies to giveaway in the coming weeks...including a limited-edition vinyl copy, which includes a 7 inch with two additional vinyl-only tracks!!

Keep listening to The Rockin' 70's and watching the website at therockin70s.com

I found this neat little blurb on the net about the new release...

New York, NY (January 26, 2009)—VH1 Classic Records is proud to announce the March 3, 2009 release of Still Dangerous: Live At The Tower Theater Philadelphia 1977. This newly discovered live album, featuring the quintessential Lizzy lineup—Phil Lynott, lead vocals/bass; Scott Gorham, guitar; Brian Robertson, guitar; Brian Downey, drums—showcases the band at the height of its prodigious powers.

Thin Lizzy roared out of the 1969 Dublin, Ireland pub scene. Their sound was crystallized in the 1976 anthem “The Boys Are Back In Town.” With Lynott’s intricate wordplay and those two lead guitarists, a template for ‘70s hard rock was cast in stone. In 1978, they released Live And Dangerous, thought to be one of the all-time great live rock albums.

Seen as a companion volume, the new live album contains two songs not found on Live And Dangerous: “Soldier Of Fortune” and “Opium Trail,” alongside such Lynott-authored classics as “Dancing In The Moonlight,” “Jailbreak” and “Don’t Believe A Word.” This long lost concert CD pulled legendary producer Glyn Johns (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones) out of retirement to remix and remaster.

Guitarist Gorham remembers the discovery of these tapes: “We pulled all these boxes down, and I didn’t even realize how many we had! There were a hell of a lot. One of the engineers was cataloging each reel, and one box came up marked `Philadelphia 2.’ That kinda stuck because I remembered Philadelphia but didn’t know what the `2’ meant. Then it hit me. What had happened, on that particular leg of the King Biscuit tour, before we actually started the tour proper, we were asked to come out and do the radio show. We were uncomfortable because we wanted to do a few warm-up shows before we went [on the air live] so we struck a deal. We said we’ll go in and do this show for you if you only simulcast four songs, and let us come back in a few weeks time and do the whole show. They agreed. This tape is that second show coming back through Philadelphia where we were ready to go out and conquer America.

“We were gambling,” continues Gorham. “Phil liked to do that. Listening to this record really takes me back to that time. Phil would say, `let’s start with this and then do that.’ He was very cool and loved to get out there and shake it up a bit and see the audience reaction. It got kind of scary at points, but it was a fun thing to do.”

Road-testing these songs prior to the release of the Bad Reputation album, Thin Lizzy sounds confident on Still Dangerous, bursting at the seams with innovations and ideas that would harness its spectacular powers–powers that would ultimately be emulated by generations of bands since.
